Award Recipients & Project Highlights:

Outstanding Community Impact Award

Recipient: Elizabeth Holland

Institution: University of Maryland School of Medicine

Description: Elizabeth Holland partnered with Safe Kids Baltimore to bring e-bike safety education directly to eighth-grade students at a Baltimore charter school. Through interactive activities and discussions, she helped increase awareness of e-bike risks and safe riding practices among adolescents. In collaboration with pediatric residents and pediatric emergency department nurses, the program also provided bicycle helmets to more than 60 students through a Safe Kids grant, creating a meaningful and lasting impact in the community.

Creative Community Outreach Award

Recipient: Sarisha Menon

Institution: Medical University of South Carolina

Description: Sarisha Menon partnered with her institution’s injury prevention team and Safe Kids coordinator to organize an interactive Bike Rodeo for children and families. The event featured a bike skills course, helmet checks, bike licenses with safety pledges, and distribution of free helmets to children in need through collaboration with a local injury attorney. Families also received T4CIP e-bike safety materials and had the opportunity to discuss injury prevention with community partners, including the local police department. She also participated in a noon conference lecture given for the pediatric residents’ academic half-day. By combining education with hands-on activities and community engagement, the event provided an innovative and memorable approach to promoting safe riding practices.

Recipient: Aidan Yong

Institution: California University of Science and Medicine (CUSM)

Description: Aidan Yong brought e-bike safety education directly to children and families through multiple community-based initiatives. In partnership with Safe Kids Inland Empire, he hosted a bike safety table at Loma Linda University Children's Day, where he educated parents about helmet use and safe e-bike practices using T4CIP educational materials. He also helped organize a Mini-Med School at Western University for second- and third-grade students and their families, delivering an interactive presentation on e-bike safety and engaging parents through a question-and-answer session. Through these efforts, Aidan expanded injury prevention education to both children and caregivers in meaningful and accessible ways.

Educational Outreach Award

Cultivating Community Connections Award

Recipient: Diana Acosta Valle & Vai Patankar

Institution: UC San Diego School of Medicine

Description: Diana Acosta Valle and Vai Patankar partnered with Safe Kids San Diego and the local YMCA to bring e-bike safety education to parents and teenagers in the community. Their interactive workshop covered e-bike classifications, common injury patterns, helmet safety, and advocacy efforts to improve rider safety. Participants engaged in a quiz on safe riding practices, a family-friendly reaction-time activity, and a raffle that provided e-bike-certified helmets to two families. The strong community participation and enthusiastic response highlighted the value of these partnerships and helped establish connections that will support future collaborations aimed at advancing pediatric injury prevention awareness.

Recipients: Shannon Conway

Institution: Northwestern University / Lurie Children's Hospital

Description: Shannon Conway, mentored by T4CIP alum Caroline Chivily, demonstrated a commitment to public advocacy by co-authoring a letter to the editor on micromobility safety that was published in the Chicago Sun-Times. They further amplified the message through an interview with a Chicago Sun-Times reporter, helping bring pediatric injury prevention to a broader audience. In addition, Shannon incorporated e-bike and e-scooter safety counseling into a clinic lunch talk on summer safety, extending the educational impact to healthcare professionals and families. Their work exemplifies how physician voices can influence public awareness and promote safer communities.

Advocacy Excellence Award

Collaborative Innovation Award

Recipient: Toyin Falade & Tom Werber

Institution: Maimonides Medical Center

Description: Toyin Falade, Tom Werber, and their residency program collaborated to establish a micromobility safety booth in the pediatric emergency department at Maimonides Medical Center. Together, they provided free helmets, distributed educational materials, counseled families on e-bike and micromobility safety, and enrolled participants in the T4CIP webinar. To extend the impact beyond the emergency department, Toyin partnered with her residency program and institutional leadership to amplify the initiative through social media and outreach across multiple platforms. This project demonstrated how collaboration and innovative use of existing networks can broaden the reach of injury prevention efforts and engage families both inside and outside the clinical setting.
